Goutama,

Thanks again for your efforts. Great summary. Very helpful. Also I agree with you in that Chuck is on the money on that issue.

Goutama,

Great data! Look at all those low mhz Piiis at insight! Thanks for posting.

One question: has anyone come up with a hypothesis for the low bin splits? Is this related to the on-board cache or the older core? If the cache, have we heard anything from Dresden on AMD's success in this area?

On another topic, here's a bit from the Register:

theregister.co.uk

AMD board stands firm behind Jerry Sanders

An attempt by an AMD shareholder to have an independent chair appointed by the board at the company's annual meeting next month is being resisted by the firm.

In the latest SEC filing, which outlines changes to be discussed at the meeting on 27 April, AMD says that the proposal, which is similar to one made two years back and then rejected, should be rejected by shareholders now, too.

The proposal wants to amend company bylaws so that the chair is someone who has not worked for the firm within the last five years amd is not affiliated to any company that advises AMD, orr with big customers or suppliers, or with family members.

The board said they recommended voting against the proposal for a number of reasons, including the fact that toppling Jerry Sanders would cause AMD to breach a five-year 1996 employment agreement. It adds that the interests of AMD "are best served by the experience and consistent direction and stategic vision afforded by a single full-time individual serving as chairman and CEO".

The SEC filing also reveals that Jerry Sanders received a $2,000,000 bonus from AMD, after its then chief operating officer, Atiq Raza, abruptly left the firm in July.

Other AMD execs also received hefty bonuses for their performance in 1999, including bringing the Athlon successfully to market and striking deals with Motorola. ©

Goutama still no sign of Piii's above 750Mhz.. I saw the same trend at Fry's in Wilsonville.

750Mhz was the Highest Piii. Right next to it a 800Mhz Athlon CPQ and a 850Mhz Athlon from HP.

Also in the same row was a 750Mhz Athlon and a 700Mhz Athlon.

There where ZERO Piii's at 733Mhz when I was there. the next speed of Piii's was 550Mhz

Lot's of Athlons at 600Mhz..

You have to just enjoy this data.

Milo

Goutama & Charles, excellent analysis of Intel production & pricing trends. Another reason for the glut of 500-600 MHz CuMines (besides binsplits) in the distributor channel is probably the fact that many/most of them are FCPGA packages and there are not enough mobo's available for them yet.

I think we will find the slope of the price vs. MHz curve declining in the next few months, a natural consequence of competition over the entire range and probable consumer/business backlash from exorbitant prices for the highest speed grades.

We will also find that the ratio of the average prices between market segments at the same MHz will decline. In other words, the CuMine 600 vs Celeron 600 will decline, the same thing on AMD's side, if they keep any overlap.

This is what I have noticed by monitoring Microexpress and Insight online data -

- Their stocks of low MHz cumines have exploded in the recent weeks.
- Their stocks of Athlons have dwindled to very few parts after the Feb price cuts. This indicates to me that Athlons are presently capacity constrained.

Goutama and Charles;

Have you guys thought of working with AMD on marketing strategies?!! Nice analysis and deduction.

If you are correct re capacity constrained Athlons, then that should be confirmed with an earlier than expected opening of Dresden, currently slated for the end of Q2 I believe. Do you agree?

Great DD!

Looks like we are set for a very hard drop on celeron ASPs in Q2 and consequently K6-2 ASPs. Luckily for AMD Fab 25 seems to ramping Spitfire real hard right now. Let's see if the infrastructure side keeps up.
