Rents and mortgages are both consumption. Your argument is about as useless as requiring that we ignore the purchases of cars versus leases for the sake of 'investment' versus 'consumption'.

BGR,

That's only the current buyer at the current prices and rent levels. The relationships may change where if you buy you can't cover all of your costs with the rents. That situation would then adjust. So they are interrelated over time but may lag each other. Why not know more about the situation by looking at both.
