Where is CSCO in all these optics deals being hammered out? When they spend over 9 billion, over a year period, you would expect some return sooner or later?

3/23/00 - METROMEDIA FIBRE NETWORK INC - Metromedia Fiber Network Signs Optical Internet Deal With Nortel
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York, New York, Mar. 23, 2000 (Market News Publishing via COMTEX) -- Metromedia Fiber Network has signed its second agreement in two months with Nortel Networks for leading edge Optical Internet technology, the latest a multi-million dollar deal for equipment to connect major cities throughout Europe.

This follows an estimated US$250 million contract with Metromedia Fiber Network announced in February for deployment of Nortel Networks' Optical Internet solutions in North America.

"The explosive demand for high-bandwidth services across Europe can only be met with Optical Internet infrastructure from customer premises at one end to customer premises at the other," said Nick Tanzi, president and chief operating officer, Metromedia Fiber Network. "Nortel Networks' OPTera portfolio delivers the reliable long-haul optical solution we need."

When completed, Metromedia Fiber Network's pan-European optical infrastructure will connect 16 major cities in five European countries to the Internet with one of the fastest, most reliable and highest capacity networks in the world.

By deploying Nortel Networks' OPTera LH, Metromedia Fiber Network will be able to take advantage of dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM), which results in a network that is scalable to more than one terabit per second capacity. DWDM maximizes traffic carrying capacity by splitting light into many different channels, each with a different wavelength or color.

"Nortel Networks is building a new, high-performance Internet with its OPTera portfolio," said Masood Tariq, president, International Optical Networks, Nortel Networks. "We are confident the Metromedia Fiber Network will take full advantage of the capacity, flexibility and reliability that are hallmarks of our industry-leading portfolio."

Nortel Networks will also provide Metromedia Fiber Network with program management, network design, implementation, integration, network surveillance, first-line maintenance, and emergency response services. The network will be managed from Metromedia Fiber Network's European network operations center in Amsterdam, using Nortel Networks' Preside network management tools.
