Greg,

Disabling Verisign would only disable certificate issuance, not ongoing use of certificates. Verisign is not involved in transactional use of the certificates after they're issued. SSL would be unaffected for existing users.

If a system were to require the use of Certificate Revocation List checking, then a CRL server could be targeted and bring things to a screeching halt, but then again, they're generally not used on every transaction either. (Too much of a performance hit.)
