mike, remember, the higher rents go, the more people live in card board boxes. therefore, higher rents don't impact cpi.

or, alternatively, if your rent goes up it means you get more "value" from the same dwelling so it is an inflation wash.

Sorry if it sounded like an ad hominem. It was meant more as a friendly jab. I must say, however, that you sound a bit touchy today. So, you think that my original assertion, the rents are not rising as fast as real estate prices are seem accurate, at least from the CPI? Of course, as you know very well, averages are often very different from extremes, and you live in Silicon Valley.
