Knopf editor Gary Fisketjon thinks it's a crock: "I don't see any revolution, and anyone who does is a fool. Why would anyone pay for software to display something that's readily available? Nowadays you don't have to go more than five steps before running into some sort of bookstore."

Ah... because it's portable, small and lightweight? Because it has fast search and bookmark capability? Because I can read it at night with its own backlight without disturbing my wife? Because it will ultimately be a fraction of the price of a hardbound? Because I can get fast download instead of having to run/drive to the bookstore? Because it allows me to get my morning newspaper and other periodicals as well, without having to cut down a slew of trees and cluttering my house? Because... nah, Gary, I'm sure it's just a crock and we're just fools. Read on, from the article:

That sounds right, until you think of those half-million downloaders, each with a credit-card number. So the wheels are turning. "Now that we've discovered there's something out there," says S&S chief Jack Romanos, "what's the second act? Nobody knows. And we're going to have to figure it out real quick."

You got it, Jack.
