WASHINGTON, March 23 (UPI) -- The head of the Justice Department's campaign finance task force told a federal judge in court documents Thursday that he is investigating whether White House e-mail was illegally withheld from investigators.

At the request of the White House and the task force, the judge is delaying hearing evidence on the e-mail in the FBI files civil suit. Former Republican officials contend in the suit that the Clinton administration obtained FBI file summaries on them for political purposes.

Task force chief Robert Conrad Jr. said in his court filing that in order for the White House to investigate what happened to the e-mail, it would have to interview many of the same witnesses as his task force. For that reason, Conrad said, the task force has asked White House lawyers "to refrain from any further inquiries pending an opportunity for the task force to conduct its own investigation."
