Networks Ignore McCain!

John McCain returned to the Senate this week followed by a host of cameras. Up to now, of course, the television networks have been eager to report his every utterance on campaign finance reform. But not this time. They chose to black out his assertion that Al Gore "has no credibility" in calling for reform until there is "a complete and full investigation" of the "incredible abuses of the institutions of government" by the 1996 Clinton-Gore campaign. The McCain statement was carried by Fox News and CNN, but the three major networks didn't mention it in their coverage Tuesday evening. This continues a current practice of pretending that news about the Vice President's ethics problems don't exist. The first decision not to cover involved the conviction in a federal court of Gore Buddhist-temple fundraiser Maria Tsia. This was followed by the decision not to cover the leaked memos on the status of the Clinton-Gore investigations, written by Justice Department official Charles La Bella and FBI Director Louis Freeh.
