Hi Betty: Well, as our friends at Gemstar have proven over and over again, a patent is worth nothing if you are not willing to defend it. Rambus has absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain by today's move. It says "we are dead serious about our patents and we are going to take steps in addition to litigation to protect them. And, oh, we will target our adversaries in whatever way will hurt them most." Sega does not need this right now, even if it amounts to nothing. It is a nice little solidarity play with Sony and should send shudders up the spine of any firm that produces product which could next be targeted by the Rambus "patent terrorists".

Their patents may prove to be too broad, or too vague, or not even on point, but right now they have the paper in their pocket and they will push it for all it is worth.

Anyone for a good game of Poker?
