Your example is instructive and goes to the heart of the matter. I agree it has to be cheaper--it's all about costs and benefits, financial and otherwise--but it would be DRAMATICALLY cheaper if it really were a priority and really were MASS transportation instead of MINORITY transportation. BUT, also, your calculation of what it really cost you to buy the car, gas it, maintain it, pay to build and maintain the highways and the parking spaces and the infrastructure and deal with the pollution generated, per mile driven, in the absence of a good train system, is way too low. That trip cost you more than you realize. That is the heart of the argument that people don't appreciate.
