If I get out of margin completely what should I sell
I've never been close to a margin call because I pay off at least several times a year (especially when the market is on a run like it is now). One way to do it is to sell covered calls on part of your positions. Put the strike price up high enough to guarentee a profit if they are called. So far, I never got called on everything and end up selling just enough to raise some cash, sometimes you pay off the margin and don't end up selling any shares. (This is a variation of market timing too, so I'll drop the subject on this thread).

John, if you need cash to get out of margin, sell longs and buy LEAPS Calls. Then you raise some cash but enjoy appreciation of the Gorilla.

See Roth's LEAPS book.
