I may be wrong, but didn't we also have a doubling or more of unit volumes over the last five years? Another problem is that everyone is optimistic on the future of disk storage due to consumer appliances and industry profitability has improved. Who would drop out now? We haven't seen Fujitsu follow through on their threat to drop out of the desktop and I'm sure its now less likely.
For the component guys, 50 GB/platter looks increasingly likely inside of two years.

Doug, I liked the 'server in a brick' idea, for mirroring your built-in HD [maybe with a time lag so you could go back to the way it was 10 minutes ago]. If this brick cost less than $200 and had foolproof software it would be attractive to me, especially with a USB connection.

My USB ZIP drive with Iomega's 'QuikSync' essentially performs this function already, but not for the contents of the whole HD, just a single folder like 'My Documents'.
