Gecko is Netscape's (AOL's ??? :)) HTML 4.0/CSS2 layout engine which is built into their open source Mozilla browser. Essentially, it's the part which just renders the display from an HTML/CSS2 source. Since it's opensource, other companies can easily take it and integrate it into any product for which they want to be able to render HTML. It's supposed to be the most standards-compliant and fastest of all the renderers, although it's hard to tell whether this is so in their current version of Mozilla since it's still in pre-beta mode.
