It was actually fascinating: It was a longwall mine and the machinery cutting into the vein of coal looked like a Cuisinart on its side.

BTW, just for fun info, the mine was 2,200 feet below the surface, the deepest in the continental U.S. It was close to Tuscaloosa. The cold got into the marrow of one's bones and stayed there.
