The SPoo margin is only 92 index points,
which is commensurate with the risk inherent
in today's markets. Obviously the clearing
house and brokers want to protect themselves
from a large up- or downdrafts.

I think these margins vary from broker to broker... but when they post their margins to the general public at large on a Web site, they have to scare people away who could not carry the contract... probably a liability issue..... still, 23K is only about 6% of the entire value of the index... that's still very heavy leverage.....
