A good part of that highway money could be saved if the trains were used more for what they are good at. Hauling freight!!

Don't know whether you have noticed, but about every 5th vehicle on the highway is an 80,000 lb ,freight loaded truck. That is where most of the highway damage is done.

Your earlier points about roads being subsidized are well known to everybody. Not a big surprise or hidden secret.

As PROLIFE says, the trucking industry is what is being subsidized, as the 18 wheelers are the vehicles ripping up our highways. One only needs to spend some time in Europe to see beautiful highways full of cars but not trucks. Freight is hauled primarily by train in Europe.

Of course, how Americans would deal with shortages of food supplies on grocery shelves (like Europe) would be interesting if we shifted to a train based freight system.

Brian, it would be interesting to see the numbers related to subsidizing the road system. I would especially like to see how much money in total taxes in taken in on the purchase of automobiles.

Brian, I remember some of the old geezers talking about declining passenger rail use many moons ago. What they blamed it on was the government federalizing the rails in WWII and returning them in rotten shape. That started the diversification of the rail companies into other areas.

Secondly, air travel really hit the rail passenger area. Cheaper and worlds faster.
