Re: "Do you think AMD is having trouble moving those speed grades in the market?"

Comment: Not at all...Looks like yields are so good that AMD can afford to lower margins on these chips...Remember,Mr. Sanders is determined to sell a minimum of 13 million Athys in Y2000 and with Xbox "scorched earth" pricing no longer a risk, can afford to be aggressive at the top-end...and what better place niche to focus on then one where little competition, if any, exists(850, 900 and 950)...Once the dust settles, the astuteness of this move will become obvious to all! AMD is going to lock up what is now the top-end of the market, but soon to be the entry point...Competitors have a tough row to hoe once AMD successfully raises the entry point to 850 MHZ!

The automakers comparison from the ebnews story should read like this:

Intel builds a car. The car doesn't work. Intel disables two wheels and get a bike, they sell to you as a Celeron.

Ted Re <<Do you think AMD is having trouble moving those speed grades in the market?>>

I think it means the volume is picking up for these part. I guess you could say they would have trouble moving all the volume that is coming at the previous prices. Still these new high speed Athlons carry very high ASP's and very fat margins.

I think the fact that AMD is not cutting prices on the old ones means they see very strong demand, at the time when it is seasonally slow.

AMD is looking great, I would buy more if I did not have so much already.

Ted and Thread. IMO I think AMD is working on getting all of the off Die L2 chips sold to OEM's before T-bird launches. If they over sell they can still slip in T-birds to fill orders.

:0) Happy Days!!!!
