I'm not going to say Irving, Mailer, and Updike (Wolfe calls them the 3 stooges) are not good writers. But I think their reviews were so negative because they are jealous of his talent and even more jealous that Wolfe will be remembered by posterity and they will not be. I also think he's never been forgiven for writing Radical Chic, The Painted Word, and other devastating critiques of lefty pretensions. Mailer still fumes that Bonfire of the Vanities was just entertainment. What a dope. Bonfire might be the best American novel written in the latter half of the century.
