hi wildstar,

i'll take a shot (or two) at this with you. i can't go with the obvious, which is to select the 'direct connection' to the internet choice because you've said that the entire page is grayed out.

so here's a thought... Select Edit | Preferences | Offline and make sure the first option 'Online Work Mode' is selected. if you don't have that option, try 'remember previous state' or 'ask me'. perhaps your communicator is set for offline mode only.

i doubt that is it. are you sure the whole proxies page is grayed out? even manual?

i'll keep thinking on it...

[edit: meanwhile, i've posted your question/problem on netscape user groups and will apprise you of any replies.]

:)

if you can access manual proxy config, then 'view', you could try entering 'netscape.com' in the exceptions box, per this help file:

"Under Exceptions, type the names of any
domains that you can connect to directly,
bypassing the proxy. For example, if you
type "netscape.com," then the proxy is
bypassed each time you view a web page
from netscape.com."

[edit: here's another possibility ... ufaq.org ]

"Visit the UFAQ "downloads" section and grab file #5 "netscape_cfg.zip".
Then, with Communicator closed FIND the file NETSCAPE.CFG located in
.../communicator/program/ directory and rename it NETSCAPE_CFG.BAK. Then
UNzip the downloaded file to that same directory. Restart Communicator,
you will have to re-enter some previously configured information but you
should now be able to select "direct connection" in the proxie setup.
