Gorbachev was more or less trying to follow the Chinese model, and couldn't make it work. Why? Because of national divisions and a much more educated, less docile, population. It is unlikely that anything could have saved the Soviet Union, however much some blame Yeltsin. I still prefer the current situation to the previous one, and I am not inclined to lament the fall of the Communist regime at all......Maybe questions about the Administration's handling of Russia will back-fire. I am willing to take the chance, if it will lead to a productive debate about policy, and the way we might proceed in the future......
