<<Told ya you should stand on the soapbox more often... Enjoyed your post.
Anyway, you guys must be reading a different Gildered Age than I.
Much flowery prose saying, essentially, "It's the bandwidth, stupid"

Yogi, I was thinking of you as I read appro's post. The November Gilder Tech Letter is extremely bullish on disk drive storage in general. He talks of dumb networks transmitting huge amonunts of data which needs to be stored at both ends of the network and refers to disk drives as electro-mechanical miracles.
I hate to say that I greatly prefer the crowdwd closet approach to having to go out on the net. Besides, isn't it easier to have an agent search your disk for something you know you have than the whole net? Although, it seems it should not be hard to have your own filing system where you can easily find things anyway.
Agent technology has been one of the net's greatest failings. Gate's The Road Ahead, envisioned advanced agent technology by probably about now. Personally, I find most of it unbelievably primitive and inefficient. -Z

>>Storewidth isn't about physically storing data. It's about accessing the data you need<< ...who controls that access will be a king maker and toll taker.

The AOL-Time-Warner deal is an example of "information wants to be free - NOT." I really believe someday remote storage will rule (my cable connection is as reliable as a water spigot) but I will always want a little place of my own to hang my hat and stretch my legs. Right now, 60GB seems about right.

P.S. Thanks for the link. I especially enjoyed the fighter pilot jokes at
