Tomas, the big story out of Asia during this cycle will be the rapid entry of former third world basket cases into the ranks of major industrial powers. I keep being surprised at the ancillary effects of this very powerful trend. Look at this story on Bangladesh, I mean, goodness gracious, we are talking Bangladesh here! No doubt in my mind, South Asia and Greater China will be the economic story out of Asia for years to come and will surprise most analysts - again.

Equally important is the development of the energy sector. In 1995-96, the country's effective power generating capacity was 2105 MW. In the first three year of Sheikh Hasina's government, an additional 800 MW of electric capacity was added to the grid. By the end of this year, another 800 MW will be added to the national grid. By the year 2002, it is projected that a further 1794 MW of capacity will added.
