Why WAP ain't the ultimate answer:

Our US wireless system is 18 months behind Europe's and 36 months behind Japan's. Although WAP uses IP technology, you cannot roam the web with it. All you get is a restricted set of proprietary text-based services that have been bundled together by the mobile operator. The main advantage of WAP for the service providor is that it keeps control of who provides which service and has an influence over who gets any revenue. But this closed system is no substitute for the full benefits of the web. Carriers must forget about being gatekeepers for wireless services. The network should be open, because that is the best way to create and enhance the services that give the system its value.
