I very much agree, which is why I'm so pleased that Mountain Lady and Cha2 have initiated a discussion of photonic networking. I believe the two most promising sectors for this decade are wireless and networking, and view both of them as "no brainers". We've had a lot of focus on wireless but largely ignored the networkers up until now. Hopefully ML's Project Hunt effort will help us all (as in ME <gg>) better understand the potential challenges to CSCO, LU, NT, and the other networkers.

Sorry Chaz - just getting caught up now on the posts - actually I am still way behind!

You raised questions concerning software. This article focuses on the enterprise network side of the equation (not fiber optics). Of course in the enterprise side of things Cisco is the gorilla and Nortel is #2. I really don't expect this to change however Nortel's strategy appears to make the sector a commodity play (i.e. very cheap) through licensing their software technology.

This strategy probably has three purposes. First to steal market share (obvious), second to reduce the prices so much that while Cisco's win in this sector is a given (expect perhaps in the high end arena with the likes of Juniper and Foundry etc..) that their margins will begin to be affected over time. Cisco needs big bucks to buy their way into the fiber optic arena so Nortel is trying to reduce their punch bowl. Third, and most importantly, licensing their routing technology could spawn all sorts of products unheard of to date. Intel is using a lot of this technology now.

OTTAWA, March 27 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT) today announced that it is working with four industry leaders to develop advanced Internet-enabled products incorporating Nortel Networks' Open IP Environment routing software.

Hewlett-Packard Company's ProCurve Networking, network processor vendor Sitera, petabit router maker Hyperchip and embedded operating system vendor Enea OSE Systems plan to integrate Open IP Environment into their products.

Open IP Environment enables scalable, modular IP-based applications in a variety of devices and environments. Manufacturers can build next-generation network solutions using products from these four key vendors. With the integration of Open IP Environment and these products, manufacturers and developers will be able to design high-performance Internet solutions that are faster, more secure and more reliable.

'Open IP Environment is an important enabler of high-performance networks,' said Kalai Kalaichelvan, general manager, Open IP Environment. 'Together with these companies, Nortel Networks is providing customers with Internet functionality required for developing new networking applications based on open APIs. Nortel Networks' Open IP Environment architecture is modular and is designed to open standards and application programming interfaces (API) for IP functions such as routing, authentication, security, encapsulation and tunneling, as well as IP applications like policy, networking management and accounting.
