Dear JDN: Think about how expensive back surgery for a human would be and the $4,500 your neighbors spent sounds like a real bargain.

We pet owners are willing to pay just about anything because they are family members--even if the IRS will not permit us to list them as dependents on our 1040's.

One Sunday morning in October 1998 I got up but my "son" did not race me down the stairs as usual. Finding this strange, I went up after about 15 minutes to get him. He did follow me down stairs but instead of going to his bowl, walked over to the little doggie bed I have for him in the living room.

About 9:30 a.m. I called the vet and asked if I should be concerned. The nurse said I could wait a bit or bring him in--so I took him in immediately. He had a very high fever and was getting dehydrated so he was admitted to the hospital for a 3 day stay.

Before admission, however, the vet brought in a form and said he was going to go over the estimated prices for what they were going to do [i.e. tests, hospital stay charges/day, etc.] so I could make an informed decision about having him treated. I freeeeeeeeeeeeked!! I told the vet I would _not_ go over projected charges, that I _did_not_care_ how much it would cost to make him well. The vet insisted we go over things. Crying by now, I stared into his eyes and slowly said, "Money is no object. I want him to get well."

You are right, JDN. Love has no price.

Regards,

Lynn, your average American with a four legged "child"

Dear JDN, my vet loves cats! He's very good. Actually, I did not have to spend that much money, maybe $300.00 which would include the next visit.

The medication is prescription, but he takes such a small dose that it doesn't cost that much. I think I paid $5.00 for the last prescription.

I think the vet tries to keep prices down. For instance, he won't treat M's upper respiratory problem until we can provide him with a video tape that shows how M acts when he's ill.

We read in a book last week that it cost $7,000 to raise a cat. It cost a lot more to raise a kid! I think it was a million or so.

If you want to try a nice but light white wine for summer, try a Sancerre. The one I tried was a regular domaine. It wasn't bottled by an estate.

It's called Domaine Cherrier et Fils. It might cost between $11 and $14.00.

Cheers,

Mephisto
