DAarbes,

Here is a partial translation:

The GHz Phantome
In the test: AMDs Athlon and Intels Pentium III with 1 GHz
AMD was on rose Monday first, Intel on ashtray Wednesday second in GHz running - thus one could actually return to the agenda. But the fool course of the two contractors is still for a long time not past. Both provide also further for plentifully Erheiterung on the grandstands.

Now it broke through thus, the magic boundary of 1 GHz. Both AMDs Athlon and the Pentium III from Intel are with appropriate clock rate to have - that want to fool into believing us at least the PR departments of the two contractors. A view of the market and the Web servers of the PC manufacturers shows however another picture: Well one week after the official conception one cannot buy a GHz computer in Germany anywhere. That takes still another one while, heard we on demand of Dell, gateway, HP, Compaq and IBM.

In the USA one can order at least already appropriate devices: Compaq offers the Presario 5900Z with GHz Athlon in the basic version for scarcely 2300 dollar, with gateway gives it the Select-1000-deluxe-Serie (entrance price: 2340 dollar) with same CCU in the meantime already in England. The German version, then told us gateways press speaker Tobias small, is in some weeks to only follow, since the manuals were not yet translated. Available are both Athlon athlon-Boliden however within fewer days.

With the Intel systems it looks fewer rosy: one can give also here orders up, but IBM and HP want meanwhile only systems offer in the USA. With Intels sample pupil Dell one knows nevertheless already a GHz computer with Pentium III to the minimum price of 8699 Marks of orders. The computers become, then is to be read on the web page, still in March delivered. Since it will give however only few GHz processors for Europe, the dispatching takes place after the slogan: Who comes first, grinds first.

Homoeopathi doses
The situation for Intels press department is still more blamabler: This is to praise advantages for the new processor drums and its, but to present or for test purposes make available one knows at present not one copy. In completely Europe, then one protests, gives it to no GHz Pentium III. The only one, which can offer Intel, are not over-clock-protected models with 866 mc/s.

One may cool, with somewhat higher voltage supply and then with 1 GHz operate those nevertheless well. Instabilities and spectacular of crashes are not missing there certainly, but over it one may spread nevertheless please the Maentelchen of the silence - finally one already pointed out in the announcement of the new CCU that first only a limited number of items is to come on the market. The mass production follows only in the third quarter.

Now, Intel, we are thus silent over regular crashes and the endless boat and Neuinstallationsorgien with the attempt to operate your 866er with 1 GHz. And there we even are silent so beautifully, are still silent we best also equal over your panic-like announcement of the GHz Pentium III. There AMD got you really coldly. The gaps between the GHz model and the to date fastest Pentium III with 800 mc/s (is in the meantime actually already in numbers of items available?) want you, as is to be heard, shortly to close. Hopefully these processors are at least available if you do not announce them as usual at all so silent.

AMD finally already delivers the own GHz PCUs and together with the GHz Athlon also directly still the missing models with 900 and 950 mc/s (899 or 999 dollar) presented. Besides the Texaner can offer also still a sufficient number of stably running GHz test systems. A GHz running have young from Texas thus with join and won right. There it also hardly disturbs that the fast Athlon with 1299 is dollar well 300 dollar more expensive than Intels GHz phantom (990 dollar).

Whether AMD with this Lorbeeren may keep also the performance crown, which so far the Athlon-850 carried, is on another page. AMDs of bench mark suggest that at least. Intels own number factory sees naturally the own product in front. Here thus only independent comparison tests help, and we supply those with the best one, which has to offer Intel at present: a over-clocked Pentium-III-866. With bench mark, with which this fell or ran all too unstably, corresponding note is in the table.

When we selected test platform for the Pentium III on the one hand the Asus the P3C with Intels i820-Chipsatz and two 128-MByte-Rambus-Modulen (PC800) of Infineon and the OR840-Board von Intel, who offers two RAM bus channels and so that to the fastest systems for Intel PCUs on the market belongs. However we could not increase the processor voltage with this board, why we knew the processor only to max. 933 mc/s high bulbs.
