Vic-- <<"Personally, I think articulate shareholders should spend a lot more time and energy lobbying the company to take
measure to increase shareholder value than talking to each other or patting the company on the back for ,,,">> for WHAT? They have done nothing positive or it would be reflected in the stock price,,, still trying to figure why this company needs a ceo.. NW could hhave taken his family to Aus and cost cpq lot less,,, El could golf all over China and the rest of the world for expenses and no salary,,, seems like they would be cheaper than MC ,,;-]===

victor ... I do not necessarily disagree with the points you make.

I believe that MC's first priority was fixing the belly-of-the-beast ... EP/EM put CPQ in such dire straights that there were viable possibilities that CPQ was on the edge of not surviving.

MC has (or seems to be) been taking care of the core business strategy(s) necessary to put CPQ back on a road from the ever-deeping ditch CPQ was in .. it seems to me he has been accomplishing this via mid/upper mgmnt cleansing, product clarification/innovation, customer attention and some cost cutting.

Now about 1 yr into MC's reign (IMHO): the company is back on A road, the back-sliding has stopped, forward motion is seen and WS/FMs are becoming partial believers.

Getting into 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears for increasing profits and increasing shareholder value while still firming up the strategy/execution is in order. I believe the next 2 quarters are going to be a MOST important time. IF MC/CPQ can't progress UPwards through the gears or the gear-box breaks ... only trouble will prevail.

Yes, some things could have been done faster and/or better, but I (for one) am NOT dissatisfied with the progress I've seen.

BTW, as per your post .... long term is here NOW

Michael

victor ... in 1997 CPQ's Board
was voted 3rd best behind CPB and GE.

Out of 10 possible points CPQ received 9.6
in Shareholder Accountability.

'If a board waits years to correct a major problem, that delay subtracts shareholder value that may never be recovered,' says Benjamin M. Rosen, Compaq Computer's nonexecutive chairman......... Business Week 1997

Interesting.........
