This article to some extent explains why E*Trade is sitting like a pretty duck.

Right now the street is not sure who will win the war in this business. ( Though I am convinced it will going to be Etrade). But unless this becomes explicitly clear to thestreet, I am not so sure E*Trade will move whole lot from here.
