excerpt from FIRE ONLINE TRAINING, Series 7 course:

Open-end companies (Mutual Funds) only issue stock. They may also borrow money from a bank in order to leverage their investing. The most that Open-end companies may borrow from a bank is 1/3 of their net asset value
