Taiwan's United Micro, Xilinx To Unveil Latest Logic Chip

TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--United Microelectronics Corp. (2303.TW) and U.S. chip company Xilinx Inc. (XLNX) will unveil their latest logic chip Tuesday, an official at Taiwan's number two chipmaker said Monday.
United Microelectronics is acting as contract maker of the copper-based Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chips, which will be made with 0.18 micron process technology and be used in network switches and for advanced video processing, according to the official.

Chip foundry United Microelectronics has already started shipping the chips.

Copper wiring on a semiconductor conducts electricity better than aluminum, the current industry standard, allowing the size to be reduced and processing power to rise. In addition, as there are fewer steps involved in copper-based manufacturing, costs can also be lowered.

Xilinx, which owns around 2% of United Microelectronics, is one of the leading global suppliers of FPGAs.

United Microelectronics' stock closed 6.9% higher on Monday at NT$116.00 (US$1=S$30.627) on volume of 74 million shares.
