QCOM--QUALCOMM Acquires Within Technology, Inc. - QUALCOMM Eudora Products Team Gains Added Expertise In Interface Design and Collaborative Workgroup Software -
PR NEWSWIRE - March 27, 2000 07:30
SAN DIEGO, Mar 27, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leader in digital wireless communications and advanced electronic messaging solutions for the Internet, today announced that it has acquired Within Technology, Inc., a technology and systems consulting firm with expertise in collaborative workgroup software, interface design and document annotation techniques. With a staff that includes both Windows(R) and Macintosh(R) programmers, and a small Internet Service Provider (ISP) facility that will serve as a test bed for application and content distribution, Within Technology brings many valuable resources to QUALCOMM Eudora Products. The acquisition underscores QUALCOMM's commitment to the continued development and technological leadership of its Eudora(R) email software product line. The financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

"Working as consultants to us for several years, Within Technology engineers have already logged thousands of man-hours in Eudora software development time," said Jeffrey K. Belk, QUALCOMM vice president and general manager of QUALCOMM Eudora Products. "This acquisition will allow us to build on the work we've already done together, and to develop some ingenious new features, products and systems that will keep Eudora on the leading edge of Internet communications."

Benefits to Eudora

Within Technology brings expertise in the following areas to the Eudora Products group:

-- User interface design and human factors research; -- Systems architecture design; -- Collaborative software for education environments; -- Text and voice annotation; -- Internetworking standards and protocols

Within Technology and QUALCOMM Eudora Products

Founded in 1994, Within Technology specializes in collaborative work and communications technologies. The company helped develop many features and enhancements for both the Windows and Macintosh versions of the Eudora email software client. Most recently, Within Technology helped to design a unique new ad-serving architecture to support the latest release of Eudora email, which includes a sponsor-supported mode with advertising in the user interface. This flexible, scalable ad-serving architecture uses a "play list" paradigm that enables ads to be displayed to users not only when they are working in email online, but offline as well.

"We've always specialized in building collaborative communications tools that bridge the gaps of time and distance," said Rob Chandhok, president and co-founder of Within Technology, and now a director of engineering for Eudora Products. "We look forward to leveraging our expertise in designing collaborative environments and computer-mediated communications systems to help extend Eudora's capabilities."

Moi!?!, Cynical?!?, Naaaaahhhh!!! <g>.

Fustrated as all hell. While I was runnig late in my office thisevening, my inspiron decided to co-conspire with my voice dictation software and decided to freeze up causing me to reboot losing my dictations three times this evening. In my fustration, I contolled my temper and avoided punching out my 15 inch LCD screem and chose as a safer target some 5/8 sheetrock. Fist went flying through it. The damage caused (not to my hand) to the wall was well worth it. It released some of my fustration. Perhaps even better is seeing the light at the other end of the room/tunnel. I give myself 6 more months of this nonsense. I sold a nice number of calls for a nice retun. Doing this every month will be my answer to managed care. Now which episode of this old house covered replacement of 5/8 sheetrock with wall paper?

PS: I loved the this old house episode filmed at 3 mile Island. "...while Norm is loading the Plutonium into the reactor, lets go see..."
