Multiservice WAN Switch and WAN Router Market Grows 22% in 4Q99 According to Dell'Oro Group; Cisco, Juniper, Lucent and Nortel are Driving the Growth in These Markets

PORTOLA VALLEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 27, 2000--
Multiservice WAN Switch and WAN Router markets grew 22% Q/Q in
4Q99, according to the Dell'Oro Group's WAN Report published earlier
this month.

In the Multiservice WAN Switch Market, Lucent continues to lead
the pack showing strong growth in 4Q99 with the CBX500. Nortel is not
far behind and has posted significant growth with the Passport series
of products, in particular the 40-Gigabit Passport 15000. In the WAN
Router market, Cisco and Juniper continue to outpace other
competitors. Due to the difficulty in developing routing code, they
have been able to capitalize on a growing market with little
competition.

"The interesting facet of these markets have been the interfaces
shipping in the boxes", says Tam Dell'Oro, Founder of Dell'Oro Group.
"While Marketing Managers talk of the availability high speed OC-48
and OC-192 interfaces, it is the low speed interfaces that comprise
the bulk of the shipments." On WAN Switches, channelized DS-1, and
DS-3 are the most popular interfaces.

On WAN Routers, POS OC-3, DS-3, and Gigabit Ethernet are the most
popular interfaces. Shipments of OC-48 are emerging with erratic
volumes Q/Q. However, as OC-48 further entrenches itself in these
markets we project that volumes will stabilize.

Paul, From the article..."In the future, it is possible that enterprises will be connected to the WAN with gigabit or ten-gigabit Ethernet Switches, priced at a fraction of the cost of SONET/SDH Multiplexers."

From what I hear, there is a very high probability of this within 12-18 months.
