Electronic Book Security Standard Under Development
Technology Companies and Publishing Industry Cooperate to Protect eBook Copyrights

NEW YORK, March 28, 2000 ? The Book Industry Study Group today announced formation of the EBX Working Group, an
organization that will develop an industry standard for maintaining copyrights of electronic books (eBooks). As demonstrated by the March 14 release of Stephen King?s new novella, Riding the Bullet, the all-digital ?electronic book? has arrived on the Internet mass market. Publishers, booksellers, distributors, and technology companies in the Working Group will complete the effort to develop a
standard way of protecting books published in this new medium.

According to the EBX Working Group Chairman, Jonathan Hahn of Versaware, Inc., ?We are developing a practical specification that publishers can think of as a reasonable, affordable insurance policy for their valuable content. Although achieving a comfortable level of security is a challenging task, practical security standards have already enabled the beginning of the e-commerce revolution, and
EBX is fortunate to have some of the best industry and technology people participating in this effort.?

The EBX Working Group is an officially constituted vendor-independent body, functioning under the auspices of the Book Industry Study Group?s Book And Serial Industry Communications (BASIC) E-Book Committee announced in November 1999. According to the Study Group?s Managing Agent, Sandra Paul, ?Book And Serial Industry Communications is pleased that we now have a process in place to develop an excellent standard that will serve book publishers, Internet booksellers, and all other organizations that are eager to use the Web to increase and improve the flow of books to people.?

Companies currently participating in the EBX Working Group include Adobe Systems Incorporated; Compound-i.com; Glassbook, Inc; Global Mentor, Inc.; Handheld Media; Harlequin Enterprises Limited; RightsMarket.com Inc.; Softlock, Inc.; Versaware, Inc.; and Yankee Rights Management.
