On the contrary, CSFB does indeed provide brokerage ""

I don't live in the US and can't speak about US market! In Switzerland CS doesn't provide brokerage services as such!
They manage funds! Their internal cost of brokerage sevice,
makes them unporfitable for clents!

GV - re: CSFB does indeed provide brokerage services; in the US, they make more money from brokerage services than they do from managing funds.
As you may know, CS also owns several semi-private funds which in total have more than $100B under management. Those funds were acquired prior to the FB acquisition. I don't know what the mechanism for returning profit to CS would be, or if that would exceed their brokerage income, but those funds are pretty good operations.
