This thread really makes me LOL sometimes. I'm so glad we started it and it's been a terrific source of information. Mostly it's good will except occasionally fierce battles erupt over what I regard as different trading styles. From my perspective, ed is the most experienced of all of us, given many years in the market, and I always listen closely to what he says. But nobody can argue with LoF's skill, as far as I can see--for instance, watching DELL and re-entering at mid 30s, just at the bottom. He does that kind of thing often. I think he does his DD and his success is no accident, even given a "barn size" bull market. Then there's taxman, with his huge list from valueline and his "buy a few calls buy a few puts" strategy which has taken his portfolio from 100k to 5 mill or whatever in a short # of years. Jerry Miller is known throughout SI as one of the savviest options players, and I've received PMs from people about his generous guidance to them, taking them from a teeny portfolio to a substantial one. I'm always pleased to see his plays. Etc etc etc--don't mean to leave anybody out, for instance, bridgeplayer's astute tax info this weekend. PAL is a great "synthetic long" player among other things, altho PAL I think QCOM will NOT retrace, we can place bets. And then of course there's me and Poet, we just pretend not to know anything, basically we run the world.

And the academy award goes to...

From baseball to poker, I'm signing off until late in the day

There are different strategies for different investors. It appears to me that taxman is a LTB&H investor who does not like the idea of paying short term capital gains taxes. I, myself, prefer this manner of investing, too (although I take many more short term gains than I would like to take).

In that respect, I am more of a buy-side options investor like taxman. That does not mean that other investment strategies do not work- Just not for me.

Jill brings up a great point when she says that we all need to agree to disagree at times. Perhaps more important than posters attacking other posters' perspectives, they should instead focus on making their case in the best manner possible, and let the readers of the thread decide for themselves which method is best-suited for their needs.

Neither you nor taxman (or even PAL) are wrong. You just have different preferences for investing. I have learned a lot from all sides, and appreciate the differing opinions.

Regards,

LoF
