The more I think about it, the more I believe Tivo is going to change everything. Forget Playstation2, Tivo has a chance to be THE next generation interactive TV platform of the future. According to a recent report from TechTrends Inc, they predict that the dollar sales of stand alone DVRs (digital video recorders) will rise at 173% CAGR throught 2002, resulting in 5 million DVR units. If Tivo gets 50% market share, that's 2.5 million units. 2.5 million customers generating about $250 million annual subcription revenue (at $10 a month and decreasing a bit down for the lifetime revenue people). Never mind the potential e-commerce capabilities and other revenue generating ideas that are likely to be incorporated into the Tivo open linux-based platform.
