brushwud. I think it was indeed tax driven, after all without taxes why spread it out....just expense it all at once. Before taxes they used arcane methods like sinking funds to accumulate money for replacement equipment to resist the shareholders urge to get their hands on the $$. Depreciation is the tax departments way of stopping companies from expensing all their capital acquisitions right away and never paying taxes/deferring taxes infinitely.
