The point is that a residential fuel cell will cost about $5,000 to $3,500 (gefuelcell & plug's estimates for 2003)
GE will be the distributor and guarantor of service. There are a lot of places where the single fuel cell has merit and a lot of homes which want quality power at an affordable cost. PLUG is NOT overvalued given the GE connection. A GAS TURBINE can NOT be more environmentally friendly than a non combustion fuel cell. The reformer throws off minor CO2. And Hot water to heat the home.
GE Power Systems has sales in 1999 of $10 billion in power generation competing products and is behind PLUG as GE knows that the fuel cell has applications in many areas in the USA, Europe, and the rest of the world.
1/3rd of the USA pays more for electricity than the plug cell will deliver (including ROI on investment)
DTE is wise in covering its bases and PLUG's fuel cell is one of the main bases!
