Nortel Networks, Intel Integrate Open IP Environment With New Intel Network Processor
Companies Demo Progress Toward Lower-Cost Open Routing, High-Performance Internet

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT] and Intel* [NASDAQ: INTC] are demonstrating a significant step toward lower-cost open routing and a new, high-performance Internet at the Intel Developers Forum this week.
The companies have integrated Nortel Networks' Open IP Environment routing software with Intel's powerful new IXP1200 network processor to create a highly flexible platform for creating next-generation applications and services.

"Intel's industry-leading architecture and Nortel Networks' Open IP Environment make an especially powerful combination," said Kalai Kalaichelvan, general manager, Open IP Environment, Nortel Networks. "This latest result of our teamwork with Intel, combined with nearly 200 licensing agreements, shows the significant momentum we've achieved with Open IP Environment since its inception late last year."

Len Rand, general manager, IXA Operations, Intel, said, "Intel and Nortel Networks share a commitment to deliver a 'smarter' generation of high-bandwidth equipment that can evolve with the pace of technology. Intel's IXP1200 network processor is designed to provide that flexibility."

Nortel Networks' Open IP Environment offers several key enhancements for products using Intel's IXP1200, including advanced Multiple Virtual Router functionality, Nortel Networks Command Line Interface, and a higher-performance version of the OSPF enterprise routing protocol.

Multiple Virtual Router functionality enables a single router to act as the platform supporting functionally separate workgroups. This eliminates the need for each group to have a separate router-based network, which helps lower costs, decrease network complexity and simplify network management. People working in finance can be on a separate virtual network from those in marketing or human resources, yet one router network can support these virtual networks. The enhanced OSPF, with a significant increase in performance, eventually results in greater scalability for large networks. Greater scalability makes the networks more flexible.

Nortel Networks' Open IP Environment is designed to open standards and open application programming interfaces for IP functions such as routing, authentication, tunneling and encapsulation, as well as applications like policy, networking management and accounting. Open IP Environment makes routing and IP software available to developers, enabling them to deliver new Internet applications and services to the market in less time and at much lower cost. Open IP Environment is a major step toward building a faster, more secure and reliable Internet, driving a shift away from complex, expensive, "Old World" routers.

Nortel Networks' Open IP Environment is based on a modular software architecture and can Internet-enable everything from servers and networking processors to Internet appliances such as set top boxes, mobility devices and personal computers. Open IP Environment's modular architecture enables developers to choose features and capabilities based on the size and type of device to be IP-enabled (from personal digital assistants to large routers), the environment in which the device will be used, and the needs of the target users.
