A lot of sites are using what you call "non-essential" stuff. I have spent A LOT of money developing for the latest browsers, and IE is much more functional and much easier to program for than NAV. IE is much more forgiving as well. I don't see this tide changing much, and as market share slips, the need to be cross browser compatible slips as well.
