U.S. security council chief to visit China

WASHINGTON, March 27 ? U.S. National Security Adviser Sandy Berger will visit China this week for talks on security issues including Taiwan, where a pro-independence party won elections this month, U.S. officials said on Monday.

Berger is to leave on Tuesday from Geneva for Beijing, and is expected to meet Chinese officials for two days of talks before returning to Washington on Saturday, National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer said.

"They'll be talking about a full range of security issues," Hammer said. "Clearly we'll also discuss Taiwan, but that's not the focus."

The meeting had been scheduled before Taiwan's March 18 elections and was part of a fairly regular series of meetings between the U.S. national security advisor and Chinese counterparts, he said.

Last week, unofficial U.S. envoy Lee Hamilton said in a visit to Taiwan that he had been favourably impressed by Taiwan president-elect Chen Shui-bian's "prudent, positive" statements on relations with rival mainland China.

The victory of Chen's Democratic Progressive Party, which espouses independence from China, sparked fears of worsening tensions with Beijing.

A U.S. official said Berger will not visit Taiwan during the trip.
