A few notes on dialectic....
Plato, apparently following Socrates, developed dialectic as a means of seeking truth. One sets forth a problem, and then entertains various hypotheses that may resolve it. Each hypothesis is subject to criticism, and defended, until it is either rejected or put aside as inadequate. At the end, one hopes to have at least clarified the issue. The strongest hypothesis is generally accepted as the solution, at least provisionally, and if there is no clear winner, the surviving hypotheses remain for refinement in future sessions. This process of exploratory argument, meant to develop and refine solutions to important questions, is the purest form of philosophical argument, a collaborative exercise where it is a matter of indifference who wins or loses, so long as each upholds his role.......
