Current OPEC production is about 1.5 million barrels a day more than quotas, according to estimates by Washington-based oil analysts Petroleum Finance Corp. and Dresdner Kleinwort Benson.

Slider, Here is a Canadian gas-related company that is worth watching. Dismal volume, but it has acquired some very cheap assets 'at the court house steps' and should do well in the coming months. (Price quoted is in CAN $)

More from Dain:
* OPEC is apparently near a deal to increase quotas by 1.7 million b/d--we'd
bet on something close to this.
* If this deal is enacted, we believe it will likely cause oil inventories to
drop further versus the seasonal norm as the year progresses--to 180 million
short by the ending ending of 4Q00 from 110 million short at the ending of
1Q00.
* In this case, upward price pressure would gradually resume, and $30-$35
would likely be revisited.
* We will probably increase our current $22-$23 WTI forecast for the rest of
2000 by at least $2.
* The response from E&P and Oil Service sectors should be positive.
* We believe an excellent buying opportunity still exists for the energy
sector.
