Nanophase Technologies Announces Initial Order for Plasma Spray Products

Qualifies to US Navy Specifications for Advanced Ceramic Coatings

BURR RIDGE, Ill., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Nanophase Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: NANX), a leader in nanomaterials and nanoengineered products, today announced that it had received an initial order for its NanoClad(TM) metal oxides for use in thermal spray coatings for high reliability applications on United States Naval vessels. In cooperation with A & A Company, Inc. (a certified Navy contractor) and Inframat Corporation, Nanophase has developed nanocrystalline metal oxides that provide performance advantages significantly exceeding the requirements of MIL-SPEC 1687A entitled "Thermal Spray Processes for Naval Ship Machinery Applications." The developed technology and materials also have important implications for a broad range of commercial applications in automotive, energy and other markets.

According to Dr. D.J. Freed, vice president for business development, "under a program sponsored by the Office of Naval Research the materials developed by Nanophase, A & A and Inframat have shown up to a fourfold increase in wear resistance, significantly enhanced machinability and tenacious adhesion to metal surfaces when compared to conventional materials. We believe that these coatings have the potential to replace existing metal coatings with superior technical and economic advantages."

Dr. Lawrence T. Kabacoff, Office of Naval Research Scientific Officer overseeing the Advanced Coatings Program, stated: "By encouraging industry to partner with the government early in the Navy's science and technology programs, the Navy hopes to develop a strong commercial base that will provide affordable products to meet military needs. The nanocrystalline materials developed under the program will help the Navy maintain its ships affordably and reduce cost of ownership while also providing a viable production base for commercial applications."

Robert W. Rigney, A & A Company Technical Director, has stated: "The improvement realized with the newly developed nano-structured thermal spray feedstock are opening areas of applications previously outside the capabilities of the current materials technologies. These materials will increase the usage of thermal spray as a repair method in the Navy and in industry significantly."

Nanophase Technologies Corporation provides engineered solutions utilizing nanocrystalline materials for a variety of industrial product applications. Using proprietary technology to produce nanocrystalline materials, the company creates products with unique performance attributes. The company's global customer base includes a number of Fortune 500 companies. Nanophase trades on the Nasdaq NMS under the symbol "NANX." Visit the company's web site at www.nanophase.com .
