Tellabs gets major broadband contract from AT&T
Thu Mar 30 15:36:00 EST 2000
LISLE, Ill., March 30 (Reuters) - Telecommunications
equipment company Tellabs Inc. said on Thursday it will supply its broadband coaxial cable product to AT&T Corp.'s
broadband division as part of a multibillion-dollar
project.
The company declined to discuss the terms of the deal, but
Jean Medina, spokeswoman for Tellabs, told Reuters, "We expect to be a significant participant in the buildout of their network."

Tellabs said its CABLESPAN 2300 Universal Telephony
Distribution System product was recognized as an approved
vendor and a significant participant in AT&T Broadband's
multibillion-dollar upgrade of its cable systems.
The CABLESPAN product will allow AT&T Broadband to use
existing cable networks to provide residential and business
customers with integrated telephone, data, and video services.
The new contract also enables Tellabs to continue to serve cable television firm MediaOne Group Inc. , which is being acquired by AT&T Broadband.
In a research note, Kenneth Leon, analyst with ABN AMRO said, "AT&T Broadband gives Tellabs enormous credibility to sell CABLESPAN 2300 to other major MSOs (multiple system operators) in the industry."
Although AT&T had used CABLESPAN in field trials in Portland, Oreg., Arris Interactive, a joint venture by Nortel Networks Corp. and ANTEC Corp. had been
expected to take the majority of AT&T's business, Leon said.
"Today's announcement refutes a clean sweep by Arris, and potential order flow for Tellabs," he said.
Leon also said he estimates revenues from CABLESPAN 2300 to double in 2000, making it the biggest contributor to new product revenues.
Shares of Tellabs rose 1-10/16 at 60-5/16 on Nasdaq in
afternoon trade.
