Drew Major: Where Are You??

Until this transition/takeover/transformation is complete, nobody inside Novell who wants to still have a job wants to be pubicly associated with the ideas and energies I have been sharing on this board and elsewhere.

For people can read these messages and do whatever they want with them. There is no political agenda here. I am sharing ideas and energies with the Novell community because I strongly believe the underlying technologies are best suited to wire and support the REAL Internet which will be powered and driven by INDIVIDUALS and COMMUNITIES - not companies.

I've never met Drew Major, but from what I hear from people I have a great respect for is that Drew IS Novell. Without Drew Novell would be toast.

A "new" engineering leadership must begin to gel inside Novell which must support the "new" marketing strategies outlined by Steve Adams and Dave Shirk.

I've never met or communicated with Steve or Dave, but I can tell they seem to really have the right vision, passion, energy and concise focus for these "new" directions.

As a former CTO himself, I think Eric knows full well the internal/external tensions between engineering and marketing. He must know there IS a New Novell which has to emerge. The question is: how does he get Novell across this desert of doubt and uncertainty until the New Novell is understood, both internally and externally?

What's curious about the current situation is that there are - from the accounts I'm getting - 5+ times the number of e-commerce related sessions at BrainShare this year, but the attendence at them is abysmally low.

The popular sessions seem to be BorderManager, ZenWorks and other network administration related subjects.

So what shaping up is that Novell is about to enter it's own "digital divide". Everyone inside Novell must recognize they will have to cross a no mans land which will be filled with a lot of questions, doubts, trials and tribulations.

I can guarantee there will be a ton of "I told you so" Netware engineers from the Old Guard trying to sabotage this pilgrimage to the other side.

For these engineers still believe the currency - ie. power -which Novell still needs to finance this trek will all have to be derived from where they've come from - Netware.

The Old guard does not fully appreciate the incredible white hot power of ideas, vision, passion, enthusiasm and energy which can and will "go higher" than Novell's legacy past and take them to where the REAL Net is taking the world - right into the arms, legs, heart, minds and soul of the individual.

My belief is that DENIM is the infrastructure/marketing model - ie. clothing - that will take them from the Old World where companies ruled and this New World where individuals - not companies - will be on the pedestal.

Last month, the pyramids of the Old model collapsed. From here on out - and with growing acceleration - ALL ownership, power and energy will massively shift away from duality of politics and companies/corporation toward this New World where SERVICES and INDIVIDUALS will reign.

Watch for the RISE in influence of these "new energy" non-for profits (NFPs). If you look hard enough you will find there are more examples of radical breakaways by these progressively aggressive and more open NFPs that are more attuned to this shift. This trend has been welling up for the past few years.

These New NFPs will be the pioneers which will start the process of pulling corporations and companies out of their shells and into this New paradigm of community and service.

Corporations have always been active with certain NFPs and the vast majority of NFPs have really been extensions of the Old guard fabric. But I see the new NFPs giving up on the comfortable relationships they've derived from the Old Business model. Pioneering new agencies will emerge which more directly and completely empower individuals to really take on this mission of service.

For more of the focus everywhere will be on the INDIVIDUAL.

Let me leave you all with an analogy which more fully and completely should compell people to understand how massive and radical and worldwide this shift is right now.

Until early this year the individual energies of the world were trapped in a dark, smokey, cluttered basement. There were always a few exceptions from individuals who really had the guts to define and walk the service line, but until the Internet there's always been just too few of these transformational digital information bits/bites spreading around the world to coalesce a real breskthrough mass or force.

What we've seen to date on what people refer to as the Internet is NOT the Internet.

For the REAL Internet has just begun. ALL the forces of the Old Business and Political Models are going to have to totally and completely get used to some new facts:

- individuals in the basement used simple email to find matches.

- others used simply email to find a light switch.

- others found a window and opened it to let the smoke out.

- still others found the door which led upstairs.

The world will be taking a massive beeline out of the Old Political/Business basement which chained people to strawman fear that MONEY, status, labels, politics, titles were the sources of power and control.

The Old Business model has been checkmated.

Making money "the Old fashion way" - by witholding data, information, or knowing someone on a purely political basis - without "being of service" will be exposed for what it really is: an abuse of an individual's or group of individual's TIME and TRUST.

The Old Fashion way was an energy-taking power/control pyramid. This model will be arbitraged away on a massive scale throughout the world from here on out.

The New Model is a SERVICE model which more clearly and directly places the INDIVIDUAL on the pedestal. We are all supposed to "be of service" to others. For if we aren't helping and serving others we are simply taking from someone.

The dysfunctional duality between one's business and personal life DOES NOT have to exist. This has been a strawman argument which companies want to snuff out, but they are gradually losing the battle for more and more people will demand quality of life changes. There's just been too much destruction of the family these past few decades. It can't go on. We've reach the limit. It's over.

An example: My wife works part time at one of the world's major healthcare providers. She's been an outspoken internal critic of these family-unfriendly policies. I encouraged her to make a stand years ago. Well, a few years ago in a corporation of tens of thousands she became "Test Case #1" - ie. she successfully fought for the right to work part-time for her skills and services were that valuable.

A year before that I encouraged her to stand up and fight against the "Boys Club" - an incestuous internal tribe of male executives who where sleeping around with other women inside and outside the corporation while trampling on the rights and dignity of women like my wife who were, too often, left to hold the bag on projects which these male colleagues simply ignored. Why? The corrupt personal fix was in: once senior executives and their underlings share these secrets they, by definition, start an internal rot inside the company.

My wife was threatened personally and there was talk that her tires would be punctured, etc. I gave her the strength to remain strong.

The club was broken in this one little department inside this massive corporation. After months of dicking around, my wife's male colleague was finally "let go" and the senior executive was move off into another department.

For the past 3 years of my wife working part-time we have been paying for childcare, insurance, Montessori school and she's gotten no reimbursement for her part-time quest to get her MBA.

She made her point/issue on this score with every senior executive inside this company. Just recently she just lost out by a whisker to a male appointment to a role overseeing the development of largest public corporation-financed daycare facility.

Well we just learned 3 weeks ago that we will finally be entitled to insurance and daycare benefits. As for her MBA, she will be graduating in June after four years - totally paid for by us with no scholarships or loans.

There's a "new" President/CEO in this company who is really out to make a huge difference.

I know what this is all about for I am running my own start-up. I stare the Tiger down everyday. I am doing this to set an example for many, many others. Family, truth, ethics and these service values are the bedrock of society. Either you are going to stand up and fight or you are going to be swept into the basement like the vast majority of people in this world.

We've chosen to set an example. My wife, God love her, may think I'm crazy - like a lot of people in this world - but by God I'm used to it.
