Compaq Commits $1 Billion For ISPs, ASPs
PAUL MCDOUGALL

Compaq last week earmarked more than $1 billion to fund Internet and
application service providers in an effort to enter new growth markets. As part
of the plan, Compaq's financial-services arm will make $600 million in
low-cost, flexible financing available to ISPs and ASPs that buy Compaq
servers and other products.

Although Compaq is struggling financially, it also set aside an additional $400
million in investment capital, which it will use to take equity stakes in emerging
ISPs and ASPs. Keith McAuliffe, VP and general manager of Compaq's
service provider business unit, says the programs seek out "unique business
models and go-to-market strategies."

Compaq made the announcement amid continued deficits from its corporate
PC business, which lost $79 million on revenue of $3.1 billion in the most
recent fourth quarter ended Dec. 31. Analysts view the news as an indication
that Compaq is now looking to sell more of its products to companies that
manage information on behalf of large business customers.
