IBM isn't the only company yearning to take a slice of EMC's business. Sun, Compaq, Dell and Hewlett-Packard also have products.

The way to pass EMC is to get to the point where storage devices from all sorts of companies can work together, Sanford said. This will ease the task of building "storage area networks," or SANs, which are essentially separate networks devoted to storage devices.

Stitch can probably tell you all about the SSA vs FC wars but clearly, IBM is using the standardization ploy to level the playing field. The fact of the matter, however, is that IBM, Sun, Compaq, Dell and Hewlett Packard all sell servers and storage systems. EMC's one key advantage is that it only sells storage systems that works with all types of servers. Besides, there's actually no pressing need to make all storage systems interoperate if you stop to think about it. Storage Management software and Service Contracts ain't ever going to be mix and match especially at the high-performance level.

<<IBM believes that increasing the interoperability of SAN devices will erode EMC's lead. To that end, it's building locations where customers can try out combinations of servers, storage devices and networking hardware. >>
Keep this in mind if we see IBM as the first OEM to announce qualification of EXBT's M2 drives.
Gus, You've been big on EMC. Do you see all the potential competition from respectable players threatening their dominance? -Z
