Bob, I agree on the one year time-to-market for a new player built from scratch. One must assume, though, that all of the major players who have not yet announced products are already well into their development cycle. Many are probably waiting for the codec/DRM mess to resolve itself.

The year needed to develop the software dovetails, though, into the time needed to develop the hardware and packaging. So, the software requirement adds nothing to the time required.

Companies that might want to have their own branded players on the market but that do not develop consumer electronics or software will, of course, have to purchase the products from an OEM. Perhaps from Maycom - perhaps from somebody else. And perhaps utilizing EDIG software and perhaps not.

But you'd be hard-pressed to name many examples of this with any other major consumer electronic product, except for those at the extreme low-end used as give-aways and incentives (calculators, for example). I doubt that "branded players" sold by non-manufacturers will ever be a significant percentage of the market.
