I believe that the Rational Corporation (RATL - Nasdaq) should be considered for the hunt.

A brief intro to RATL

RATL offers a cadre of software development tools (CASE tools), consulting and educational services, etc. all focused on the development of computer systems using Object Oriented (OO) technology.

In October of 1997 a software standards group, the Object Management Group (a consortium of major software development players including Microsoft) accepted the Unified Modeling Language (UML) as a standard for Object Oriented software development. The three prime architects of the UML work for Rational. (These 3 are known as the 3 amigos.)

Computer Software is ubiquitous. Much of the software being developed today is very complex. Old methods of designing and programming systems (function oriented) no longer work. OO methods are very quickly becoming the standard for all development. The UML provides a set of semantics (similar to blueprint diagramming standards, symbols, etc.) to be used when developing OO systems. There is a major movement towards OO development throughout the world. It is very rapidly becoming the standard technology in software development.

Discontinuous Innovation - The UML should be considered as a candidate discontinuous innovation. It is now the standard OO software modeling language. The UML facilitated OO development in that OO existed before but floundered. The entire software community has accepted and is moving forward using UML.

Killer App ? The RATL killer app is Rose. Rational Rose is the key CASE tool used by designer?s to carry out OO analysis and design.

RATL keeps a significant hold on the UML even though it is under the control of the Object Management Group. The three amigos continue to have a lot to say.

RATL provides a complete suite of software development tools.

The Value Chain - RATL has built formal alliances with Microsoft and IBM. RATL has also developed what it calls RATL Partners. There are 3 types of partnerships: Systems Integrators, Technology Partners, and Qualified Practitioners.

RATL has continuously pursued new markets as it continues to grow. The huge interest in Web applications has caused RATL to focus in this environment. Others markets addressed as of late include Realtime software development as well as Data Modeling in the OO world.

I believe that RATL exhibits many characteristics of a gorilla and as a result, should be considered in the hunt.
